Heritage Walk
Matlock and Thereabouts

Description: Taking a walk around the town of Matlock, by taking a look at old Matlock, including Pheobe Bown’s grave, the old Wheat sheaf inn and the old school house, Then we shall look at Matlock town itself, the site of the old pinfold, how causeway lane was developed, steep turnpike, firs parade, hall leys park, Batemans park, Matlock bridge and finally the development of Dale Road.

Heritage Walk
The old show caverns of Matlock Bath

Description:

Taking a walk around the village of Matlock Bath taking a look at how the village was transformed from lead mining to tourism. The first show cave to open was the Cumberland in 1800; by the time the Masson Opened in 1874 the number of show caverns had shot up to 13. So come along and take a journey back in time to see how the transformation took place.

The Stanton Mines

Pretoria Chert Mine, Bakewell

Description: Another evening opportunity to explore this fascinating mine, with its impressive pack-walls, artefacts and in places, more holes than rock! This is an easy grade, dry trip, which is suitable for novices. Boilersuit or old clothes are fine. Access into the mine involves a 15ft (5m) fixed ladder climb, so a belt or helmet mounted light will be essential. Mostly large walking size passages, which are steeply inclined in places. An optional short crawl leads into another part of the mine, with a colourful surprise at the end! You’ll find it well worth bringing a camera. Party size is limited to 8, plus the Leader. The Alport Mines

Description: Visiting various mines in the Alport mining field, including the Broad Meadow shaft where the water pressure engine that is now in the Peak District Lead Mining Museum first worked in 1819, the site of the famous Guy Engine, the enormous Pages Shaft, Hollow Farm where Trevithick’s engineer Richard Page once lived, the site of Crash Purse and Peynet Nest shafts, and finally visiting the churchyard to look at the graves of the miners who were killed in the explosion at Mawstone Mine in 1932.

Popular Society Mine Visits

Description: Some mines are featured in the Society Meets Programme on a regular basis, such as; Devonshire Cavern, Great Masson Cavern, Wapping Mine (Cumberland Cavern), Owlet Hole Mine in Matlock Bath, Holme Bank Chert Mine & Pretoria Chert Mine at Bakewell, Rookery Black Marble Mine at Ashford, and finally Mouldridge Mine at Pikehall. All these mines will be featured in tonight’s presentation, so whether you have visited them all, just some or if you have recently joined the Society and not visited any of them, a unique opportunity to briefly visit eight mines in an evening! A refreshment break is planned halfway through, details as for the above meet. Buffet bookings must be made in advance no later than Tuesday the 18th of November.

Coal Mining in North Derbyshire & South Yorkshire

Description: A unique opportunity to take a trip back in time to when collieries were in abundance all over North Derbyshire. We will see images of various collieries, including Renishaw Park, Markham, Westhorpe, Arkwright, Bolsover, Creswell and others. These were all owned by the NCB, however, there were also private drift mines, and we will also see Doe Lea Colliery, mainly underground photos, Strathfield Colliery between Clay Cross and Alfreton, and others. A more recent site we will see is the Orgreave Opencast Site in South Yorkshire. Finally, a partial exploration of Hollingwood Common Canal and Mine, near Chesterfield. A refreshment break is planned halfway through, a buffet of chips & sandwiches costing £4.50. Buffet bookings must be made in advance, no later than Tuesday the 4th of November. Please contact Paul Chandler if you require the buffet. Note: A minimum of 15 people is required for the buffet, otherwise a small room hire charge will be levied.

Holme Bank Chert Mine

Description: This is an easy, dry through trip. Most of the passages are large and of walking size, although there are some sections requiring stooping and a couple of easy scrambles. The mine is quite extensive, with over 2 miles of passages, and is an ideal novice trip. It is well worth bringing a camera. The size of the party size is not limited. Access is by kind permission of Oldfield Design, Bakewell.

The Heritage of Samuel Oldknow
Daytime Event
Saturday 19th July 2014
Description: In the morning we will meet Bob Humphrey-Taylor of the Mellor Archaeological Trust at the Roman Lakes. He will lead us on a tour of the current excavations at Samuel Oldknow’s Mellor Mill. The ground is likely to be uneven and boots are advisable.
This mill was at its peak in 1804 when it operated 10,080 spindles and employed 550 hands. It was powered by a colossal waterwheel directly fed from the Roman Lakes. Later this was replaced as a power source by several steam engines. The mill was burnt out in 1892.
The Leisure Park has a Tearoom and also facilities for picnicking.
After lunch, those who require more exercise will be led on a walk to explore the 16 lock rise and aqueduct on the Peak Forest Canal at Marple. This canal was Oldknow’s transport system to link his quarries around Doveholes, the Peak Forest Tramway to Bugsworth and his limekilns and cotton mill at Marple with the rest of the country.

Cambrian Slate Mine, Glyn Ceiriog
North Wales

Description: A joint meet with the Masson Caving Group. This is an easy grade trip, oversuits or boilersuits are suitable, but there is shallow water so wellies are advisable, and bring gloves. The passages are of walking height, apart from one short, low section into a separate part of the mine. Access requires the descent of a steep slope which can be slippery if wet. It is worth bringing a camera to record the mine artifacts, and the large chambers associated with slate mines. If you wish to attend please notify Paul Chandler in advance. Silence, High Rake and Watergrove Mines
Daytime Mining Heritage Walk
Sunday 6th April 2014
Description: An opportunity for Society members and guests to visit three Society Conservation Projects, one of which has recently been completed, and see other mine sites en-route.
This eight mile walk leaves Foolow and takes Bradshaw Lane to Silence Mine. Then on to High Rake Mine via Great Hucklow and Windmill. Castleton Lane, Conjoint Lane and Litton Edge will take us to Litton, then via Tansley Dale, Cressbrook Dale and Wardlow to Watergrove Mine, from where we return to Foolow.
Please bring usual walking gear, packed lunch and drinks. There is one steep ascent out of Cressbrook Dale and sections of road walking but otherwise easy going. Quiet dogs on leads only please.

Holme Bank Chert Mine

Description: This is a great opportunity to do a through trip. We will enter via the top entrance, which is located in a former chert quarry, and then make our way through the mine to see how the chert was extracted. Then we will emerge back to surface via the lower entrance. The total length of the mine is two miles and involves a short walk along the “M1”.

Society Mining Visits and Peak District Mining

Description: This 90 minute show will first cover Society visits to Scout Moor Flagstone Mine in Lancashire, Carrock Tungsten Mine in the Lake District, Cwmorthin Slate Mine and Cwm Bychan Copper Mine in North Wales, a surface walk to Poynton Collieries and other mines, as well as the 2011 NAMHO Conference in Shropshire.
After refreshments we will see Peak District mining for almost anything except lead, including fluorspar, calcite, chert, black marble, Blue John, copper, flagstones, limestone, coal, iron ore and fireclay. Some of the mines visited were operational at the time, so there are some unique, historical slides! Another joint meet with Masson Caving Group, guests are most welcome.

Exploring Caves & Derbyshire Lead Mines

Description: The first part of this roughly 1½ hour show will visit selected caves and potholes in the major caving regions of the UK, the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Mendips and South Wales, as well as County Clare in the Republic of Ireland.
After a break for refreshments, we will then see slides of surface remains and fascinating underground remains of lead mining in the Peak District. An opportunity to venture underground and travel back in time without getting muddy & wet! This is a joint meet with Masson Caving Group, and guests are welcome.

Description: This walk will mainly take us on a big loop of the village looking at the former light railway, Butts Quarry, Brimstone Dyke Mine, the Gregory Mine tips and site of the early Gregory Mine, Overton Mine, Cockwell Sough, Mill Town Quarry, Fall Gate Station, the Miners Arms and the former pinfold. Description: This years Barmote event will take place on Wednesday 16th October 2013 at the Mining Museum at Matlock Bath. The event will begin at 11.00am prompt. There will be an introduction as to why the event takes place and two presentations; one entitled the Matlock mines, by Tony Wood and Paul Chandler, the second is the Bagshaw Cavern Resurgence cave, a short film by Dave Webb, this will be followed by the traditional handing-out of clay pipes to new members.
Food and drink will be provided. As usual the new members will receive their own invites, usual suspects will need to phone or call in at the museum just to give an idea of numbers for food. There will be a chance for new members to take a tour of the mining museum and Temple Mine as well.

This mine is entered via a 30 ft deep fixed ladder followed by a climb down which is followed by another fixed ladder climb of 15 ft, and therefore cannot be classed as a novice trip. Once at the bottom of the mine we will have a look around the former Victoria show cavern and also take a look at a fire set level.

Arrock Black Marble Mine, Ashford

Description: This is an easy to moderate grade trip. There is a low crawl near the entrance, so lighting needs to be hands-free, a torch in the hand is not suitable. The remainder of the mine is mainly walking or stooping size, dry passages. Arrock Mine is quite different to the Rookery Black Marble Mine nearby, in that timber has been used to support the roof, some of which, you might say, has seen better days! Although less extensive than the Rookery Mine, it is arguably more interesting. Party size is not limited, there is no need to book, but this trip is not suitable for children. Access by kind permission of the Chatsworth Estate.

Description: This year's Heritage Day event will be held at the Magpie Mine near Sheldon on Saturday 14th September 2013. The site will be open to the public from 12.00 noon until 5.00pm. From early "woodpecker" pick workings, hand picked 'coffin' levels to relatively modern mining artefacts it has plenty to offer and is interesting from both the geological and mineralization perspective.

Description: This year's Barmote Event will be held at the Mining Museum, Matlock Bath, on Wednesday 17th October and will start at 11am prompt. New members will receive an invitation, while other members wishing to attend should contact the museum beforehand on 01629 583834 to give them an idea of numbers for refreshments.
A guided tour of the museum will be available for new members. There will be two presentations and new members will receive a clay pipe. The event will finish at 2.00pm.

Holme Bank Chert Mine, Bakewell

Description: Another chance to revisit this superb mine and see the amount of work the miners did in their arduous task of extracting the chert. This will also include a trip down the M1, and a chance to have a look at the now abandoned Davy blocks works.

Description: A joint PDMHS, Masson Caving Group and CATMHS (Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society) meet.
Underground trips include Birkshead Gypsum Mine, Nr. Appleby, Carrock Tungsten Mine in the Keswick area, and Coniston Copper Mines. Accommodation will be in or around Keswick.

Pretoria Chert Mine, Bakewell

Description: This evening visit provides another opportunity to explore this fascinating mine, with its impressive pack-walls, artefacts and, in places, more holes than rock! This is an easy grade, dry trip, which is suitable for novices. Boiler suit or old clothes fine. Access into mine involves a 15ft (5m) fixed ladder climb, so a belt or helmet mounted light is essential. Mostly large walking size passages, which are steeply inclined in places. An optional short crawl leads into another part of the mine, with a colourful surprise at the end! Worth bringing a camera. Party size limited to 8, plus Leader.

Wardlow Mires Area
Surface Walk - CANCELLED

Description: UNFORTUNATELY THIS WALK HAS HAD TO BE CANCELLED AS THERE WILL BE INSUFFICIENT TIME TO VIEW ALL THE FEATURES OF INTEREST. IT WILL NOW TAKE PLACE AT A LATER DATE, TO BE ADVISED IN DUE COURSE.
A chance to look at the sites around the Wardlow Mires area, including a chance to look down on the excavation of the site of the c.1794 Newcomen pumping engine which is being carried out by the Conservation Team. Also, the walk will visit the new Watergrove Mine and the shafts associated with Watergrove Mine in the Housley area.
Optional food to be arranged, hopefully at the Three Stags Heads at Wardlow Mires.

Description: Starting from the Boathouse this walk will take us up onto Masson Hill, looking at the course of Ringing Rake Sough to the Masson Mine complex. We will visit the sites of Hasland Pipe Founder Shaft, Deep Shaft and the Overseer Shaft, the walk then takes us back down past the New Incline Level and past Masson Sough onto the top of St. John’s Road. A short walk from here will bring us back to the Boathouse.

The Old Show Caves Of Matlock Bath

Description: This walk goes round Matlock Bath taking a look at how the village was transformed from lead mining to tourism. The first show cave to open was the Cumberland in 1800; by the time the Masson opened in 1874 the number of show caverns had shot up to thirteen. Bonsall By Night

Description: A chance to see Bonsall at night, We will visit sites including the old frame work knitters’ mill dating back to 1737, Puddle Hill where the Cheadle Brass company once had its offices, Upper Town (which was once a separate hamlet to Bonsall), then a walk down Stepping Lane (head torches advisable) will give us a chance to get a good view of the village lit by its street lights. Then we will look at Yeoman Street and the High Street and the businesses that were once there, before returning to the Barley Mow past the former gas works and colour mill.

Exploring Caves and Derbyshire Lead Mines

Description: The first part of this show will feature a very brief, taster visit to the major caving areas of this country, namely; The Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Mendips, South Wales and also County Clare in Southern Ireland. The second half will cover "Lead Mining in the Peak District". The presentation will look at both surface remains and underground evidence of the lead mining industry in the Peak District. Next a journey from digging out the lead ore through to smelting the ore and some of the uses of lead. Finally there will be a look at mining customs and a mining miscellany. Description: This film show will last about one and a half hours with a break for refreshments halfway through.
The first film will feature Cornwall's Tin Mining in a TV documentary titled "Nation on film", plus snippets from Derbyshire. After the break a film on the Nenthead Lead Mines (With kind permission of I.A. Recordings) will be shown, featuring visits to Smallcleugh, Rampgill & Capleclough Levels, plus some surface features. Finally, some more film snippets, including a "haunted mine".

Clayton Mine, Ecton

Description: This is an easy grade, but quite long trip, into this impressive mine. Wear an oversuit or boilersuit; a helmet and appropriate lighting is essential. The water in the entrance level is often just over Wellington depth so bring a change of clothes for afterwards. The trip will concentrate on the history and archaeology of the mine.
This trip is limited to 10 people, plus leader/backstop. A donation of £2 per person for the Ecton Mines Educational Trust will be requested.

Bage Mine, Bolehill
(daytime underground meet)
Sunday 13th November 2011
Description: A chance to make a descent (by winch) of the Hard End shaft down to the 190ft level, then explore the workings which take you down onto the 238 ft level. If conditions in the mine are favourable a further descent may be made onto the 303ft level, after which it will be possible to ride back on the winch seat to the surface the whole depth of the shaft.
This trip will be limited to 20 people and booking is essential. A BCA insurance card is also required for this meet.

Description: This years Barmote event will take place on Wednesday 19th October 2011 at the Mining Museum at Matlock Bath. The event will begin at 11.00am prompt. Two films will be shown, one entitled "From Ore To Orchids", the other "The Hollow Hill", this will be followed by the presentation of clay pipes to the new members. Food and drink will be provided. As usual the new members will receive their own invites, usual suspects will need to phone or call in at the museum just to give an idea of numbers for food. There will be a chance for new members to take a tour of the mining museum and Temple Mine as well.

Arrock Black Marble Mine, Ashford

Description: This is an Easy/Moderate grade trip. There is a low crawl near the entrance, so lighting needs to be "hands free" - a torch in the hand is not suitable. The remainder of the mine is mainly walking or stooping size, dry passages. Arrock Mine is quite different to the Rookery Black Marble Mine nearby, in that timber has been used to support the roof, some of which, you might say, has seen better days! Although less extensive than the Rookery Mine, it is arguably more interesting. Party size is not limited, there is no need to book, but this trip is not suitable for children. Access by kind permission of the Chatsworth Estate.

Description: Heritage Day 2011 is on Saturday 10th September and will be held at Magpie Mine, Sheldon. The mine has a colourful history dating back to the 1600s. The mine will be open to visitors between 12.00 and 17.00. Surface tours of the mine site will be available.

Description: A walk which will take a look at the site of Peter Nightingale's Mills at Lea, which were later let to John Smedley Senior, then a walk down the Nightingale Arm of the Cromford Canal to the Leawood Pumping Engine house. From there we will walk to the High Peak Junction, and up the Sheep Pasture Incline past the Catch Pit and on to the site of the Intermediate Engine House, which once wound trucks up the Cromford Incline before it was made into one. We will then walk down Intake Lane, once the main road between Matlock Bath and Belper. A walk along the canal tow path will then bring us back to the High Peak Junction car park.

Eyam - The Plague Village

Description: This walk will take us around the old village of Eyam, looking at sites where the plague struck in the mid 1600s, the cottage where it broke out, the gravestone of Katherine Mompesson, the wife of William Mompesson who enforced quarantine on the village to try and keep the plague at bay. Various other points of interest will be visited which will bring the plague story to life, and explain how the nursery rhyme "Ring a ring a roses" came about.

Description: An all day walk of about 7 miles around Poynton and into Adlington looking at the history and remains of the extensive coal mining industry that once operated in the area. The Lead Mills Of Linacre
Sunday 27th March 2011
Description: A short walk of approximately two hours round the sites of two 16th century water powered lead mills and associated furnaces in the Linacre Valley, Northwest of Chesterfield.
Charcoal and White coal was produced in the local woods, and there are many sites, sunken and terraced track ways plus some trial pits to be seen. Both the Foljambe and Heathcote families, merchants among their other interests, lived in this area. Guests and non-members welcome - donation appreciated.

North Wales Mines Weekend Saturday 19th and Sunday 20thMarch 2011
Description: Based at Blaenau Ffestiniog for accommodation etc. Members are advised to take walking gear and a rucksack for underground gear, food and drink, first aid kit etc. For trip bookings or more information please contact the organiser Paul Chandler.
On the Saturday there will be a choice of two trips into slate mines near Blaenau Ffestiniog, Croesor Mine and Rhosydd Mine, or the Croesor to Rhosydd through-trip. Oversuit and furry suit, plus gloves, are recommended for these trips, which will both have external leaders.

Description: Mat & Niki Adlam-Stiles will be presenting their latest film, "From Ore To Orchids", which explores the unlikely and sometimes uncomfortable inter-relationships between man, industry and nature in the aftermath of mineral extraction in the Peak District. The first half will comprise a short slide show and talk about the lava caves of Sicily, Iceland and Hawaii.
"From Ore To Orchids", which includes exclusive footage of Glebe Mines' operations on Longstone Edge, will be shown in the second half of the evening. (See www.winstercavers.org.uk for more information).
Before the main film is shown there will be a refreshment break with optional buffet. After the main feature there will be an opportunity to view the complete Glebe Mines interview - a particularly relevant piece given the likely cessation of operations.

Description: This walk will take us around Old Matlock Town, centred on the parish church of St. Giles. We will look at the former pottery, originally the Wheatsheaf public house, then down Stoney Way to some of the oldest houses in the Matlock area, passing the pinfold and looking at how Causeway Lane was built. We will cross Hall Leys Park to take a look at Matlock Bridge, onto Dale Road, past the old Post Office and Town Hall, and see how Dale Road has changed over the years with the help of old photographs. We will then follow the A6 into Matlock Bath, passing Dale Cottage and telling the story of Phoebe Bown who built it in the 1800s - later we will visit St. Giles Church and view her gravestone. Finally we climb up onto High Tor to take in the views before heading back into Starkholmes village. Optional food and drink at the Duke of William afterwards.

We will also walk down Bank Road, the site of the former tramway which took passengers from Crown Square to Rutland Street. Description: The Agenda will commence at 15.00 and will consist of two or three talks of approximately half an hour to forty minutes. There will be a break for tea/coffee/biscuits.

The AGM will take place at approximately 17.30 and last for approximately one hour. The "Miners' Buffet" will be served at 7 pm as follows:

Mining Heritage Walk
Ecton Hill

Description: This day-long walk is an opportunity to visit many of the varied surface mining features on Ecton Hill, including those by the river and others high on the ridgetop. These include mine entrances to levels and shafts, dressing floors, gin circles, a bouse team, leats, the powder house and other mine buildings, and last but not least the Boulton and Watt engine house.
The walk includes an ascent (slowly, with rests) of the very steep and high hillside and needs a reasonable level of fitness. Bring sandwiches and usual hot/wet/cold walking equipment.

Description: In the mid 1960s a residential development in Suffolk suffered a series of catastrophic collapses arising from underground chalk mining that resulted in the abandonment of the development. This illustrated presentation by Peter Clook, a Chartered Mining Engineer, describes the work carried out to determine the extent of the workings and their condition.

The evening will comprise a series of short films about caves and mines including: Cromford Sough; the Giant's Hole Round Trip at Castleton; Lost John's Cave, Gavel Pot and Short Drop Cave in the Yorkshire Dales; and a combined caving/canyoning trip in the spectacular Grande Ravine on the French island of La Réunion.
Note this is a Tuesday (NOT Wednesday) evening event and is being held at the Miner's Standard in Winster so you can enjoy a drink or two whilst watching the films. There will be a break half way through the evening and an optional buffet (chips and sandwiches) will be available during this time for a nominal fee.

Heritage Open Day 2009 - Magpie Mine Saturday 12th September 2009
Description: The Society is again taking part in the nationwide Heritage Day event that is held each September. Magpie Mine will be open on the afternoon of Saturday 12th September 2009 during the Heritage weekend and members of the the public are invited to attend.
The mine has a fantastic history stretching back to the 1600s. The mine will be open to visitors between 12.00 and 17.00. Surface tours will take place every hour or as needs require. There will be refreshments on offer and a souvenir stall.

This is the first of three Society evening visits, courtesy of the Goodluck Mine Preservation Club (GLMPC), to Goodluck Mine, a show mine also registered as a working mine. It is an easy grade trip, but there is short, quite steep walk up to the mine.

A moderate grade dry trip. Helmet & cap lamp essential, oversuit or boiler suit, and kneepads advised! Entrance series involves two tight squeezes and is NOT suitable for persons of a large build. The cave is natural, however, lead miners have entered and left smoked inscriptions on the roof where the cave enlarges.

Description: Easy grade, oversuit or boiler suit, evening trip. A number of fixed ladders give access to the cave system and a lower passage of walking or stooping height. A short side passage near the entrance will also be explored. This cave was formerly excavated over many years, the diggers even installed (now defunct) electric lighting and a sound system! As the location is sensitive, with access to the cave through a garden, the party size must restricted to six plus the leader, preference will be given to Society members who have not visited this cave before.

Description: The 2009 National Association of Mining History Organisations Conference is to be held at County Hall, Matlock on 19, 20, 21 and 22nd June 2009.
The theme of the conference is "Archaeological Landscapes". Registration is available at the Peak District Mining Museum in Matlock Bath throughout Friday until 5 pm and then at County Hall Matlock. There is a reception on the Friday evening at County Hall which will include welcoming speeches from the NAMHO chair and the PDHMS chair. Dr Jim Rieuwerts will talk about the early days of the Society as he is one of the founder members. Dr John Barnatt will set the scene of the conference and finally there will be a presentation of dynamic underground photography by Paul Deakin and Jon Humble.
A series of lectures will be held at County Hall on Saturday and Sunday. A programme of underground trips and surface walks will take place on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This will offer a diverse insight into archaeological landscapes in Derbyshire.
Underground trips are of varying severity and will require suitable attire to be worn. There are also limited places on these trips.
On the Friday and Saturday evenings, food will be available at County Hall together with bar facilities.
On the Sunday evening a grand barbeque is to be held at Magpie Mine near Sheldon - the Society's field centre.

Mining Heritage Walk - The Alport Mining Field Tuesday 16th June 2009
Description: This walk visits various mines in the Alport mining field, including the Broad Meadow shaft, where the water pressure engine that is now in the Peak District Mining Museum first worked in 1819, the site of the famous Guy Engine, the enormous Pages Shaft, Hollow Farm where Trevithick's engineer Richard Page once lived, the sites of Crash Purse and Peynet Nest shafts and finally visiting the churchyard to look at the graves of the miners who were killed in the explosion at Mawstone Mine in 1932. Optional food and drink at the George Hotel afterwards.

Mining Heritage Walk - The Old Show Caves of Matlock Bath Tuesday 2nd June 2009
Description: We will take a walk around the village of Matlock Bath looking at how the village's industry was transformed from lead mining to tourism. The first show cave to open was the Cumberland Cavern in 1800; by the time the Masson Cavern opened in 1874 the number of show caves had shot up to 13. Come along and take a journey back in time to see how the transformation took place. Optional food and drink afterwards at the Boathouse Inn, Matlock.

Matlock Bath Circular Walk - Midweek Walk Wednesday 25th February 2009
Description: This circular walk will be full of interest from start to finish, with spectacular views (weather permitting), passing through "Derwent Valley Mills Heritage Site", and viewing a number of mine entrances along the way.
Although only 5 miles in length, this is not an easy walk, it contains short, but steep sections and is quite undulating, reaching 'high' points on both sides of the 'Derwent Valley'. Description: A chance to take a walk over Bonsall Moor passing various mining sites along the way, such as the Beans & Bacon mine, Whitelow Rake, the Blakelow opencast and Horse Dale sough, then into Bonsall passing the former frame work knitters shop dating back to 1737, a refreshment break will be made at the Barley Mow Bonsall. After which we will begin to make our way back to Winster, passing the sites of Slack & Slack Break, Greenhills, Drummers Venture and Winster Pitts mines, from here a walk along Occupation Lane will lead us back to our starting point.

Bakewell and Ashford Mining - Midweek Walk Wednesday 28th January 2009
Description: Bakewell and Ashford were associated with the mining of both Chert and Black Marble respectively and this walk will visit both mines and other aspects of these mining areas. The circular walk is around 6.5 miles and although field footpaths will be used, some road walking will be involved. Quiet, well behaved dogs are welcome, which must be on a lead at all times. Yatestoop Mine Heritage Walk Sunday 4thJanuary 2009
Description: A full day's walk looking at the famous Yatestoop Mine at Winster.
From the presumed site of the founder shaft sunk in 1702, the course of the vein northwards will be followed visiting the sites of the Climbing Shaft, Old Bess Shaft, the North Forefield Shaft and looking at the course of Yatestoop Sough. On the return route the Coaling Shaft and the tail of Winster Sough will be visited.

Description: This is a walk over Middleton Moor to look at the sites of Hill Top Mine, Samuel Mine, the Blacks Rakes, Thumper Sitch and Snake Mine. From Snake Mine we will walk back over the moor and back onto the High Peak Trail near to Intake Quarry and then back to the car park.

Great Masson Cavern, Matlock Bath Tuesday 28th October 2008
Description: This is the ever popular extensive part natural, part mined complex. There are large and impressive natural caverns full of interest, from very early "woodpecker" pick working to hand picked coffin levels and relatively modern mining artefacts. It is interesting from both the geological and mineralization perspective. It is both a leisurely and a sporting meet. 2008 Barmote Event Wednesday 22nd October 2008
Description: This year the Barmote Event will take place on Wednesday 22 October 2008 at the Peak District Mining Museum, Matlock Bath. The guest speaker will be Andy Pollock, Head Ranger for Derbyshire County Council's Countryside Services, and he will talk about the Cromford and High Peak Railway. Also speaking will be John Barnatt, Archaeologist, who will discus the findings at the Society's dig at High Rake Mine, Windmill and the latest dig at Silence Mine near Foolow.
Refreshments will be provided at the museum. All new members will receive their own invitation to the event. All other members intending to attend the event should contact the mining museum by telephone or email for a reservation.

Clatterway Level, Bonsall Tuesday 14th October 2008
Description: Three possible trips are on offer at this meet. The choice depends on the level of experience. There are two through trips involving ladder/rope work, plus an adit trip, in and out the same way.
Trip details are as follows:
Adit trip - Easy grade, suitable for novices. Small entrance, followed by undulating passage, walking, stooping and crawling. Dry, but can be muddy. Party size not limited, no need to book.
Adit to Adit trip - Moderate grade, not suitable for novices. Narrow upper entrance, leads shortly to narrow pitch 5m to Intermediate Level. Follow level short distance, until Second pitch of 3.5m is reached. At bottom of Second pitch, you are in mine complex, which eventually brings you out at Lower entrance.
Lower to Upper entrance trip - reversal of above. First and Second pitches will be rigged with ladders, lifeline/abseil ropes (Not SRT). Party size limited. Equipment required: Adit trip and Adit to Adit trip – Over suit or Boiler suit, Kneepads (advised), Helmet and Cap-Lamp. Hand held torch not suitable.

Description: This is a chance for people who could not attend the previous walk led by Mick to take a walk over the Pastures, to take a look at the mines in that area. The walk will visit the sites of the Great Rake Mine, White Rake, Old and New Town Head Mines, passing the Kings Chair and the old windmill. There is also a short walk along the disused High Peak Trail, passing Harborough Rocks and the Bees Nest Sand Pit, Brassington.

Cambrian Slate Mine, Glyn Ceiriog or Milwr Tunnel, Mold - Sunday.
Meet details:
Penarth Slate Mine - Easy walking underground. Oversuit or Boilersuit trip. Bring your high intensity spotlights for large chambers. Strenuous walk to the mine. Party size not limited.
Cambrian Slate Mine- Easy entrance scramble, followed by easy walking. One very short low section. Large chambers with a few artefacts. Oversuit or Boilersuit trip. Again, bring your high intensity spotlights. Party size not limited. Reference: A Gazeteer of the Welsh Slate Industry - A J Richards(1991).
Milwr Tunnel - This is a strenuous trip, with about 6 hours underground. Actual trip will be decided on the day by Grosvenor Caving Club(Hosts). However, normal trip is to climb down Olwen Goch Shaft, which is 400ft deep and fitted with fixed ladders(23 ladders, with platforms every 20ft). Then approx two mile walk to Powell's Lode Cavern and lake, via Milwr Tunnel. Return the same way, followed by visit to very impressive and extensive limestone workings(over two miles of chambers, up to 80ft high). Next part of trip, involves climbing fixed ladders & ropes, through large limestone workings. Longish walk through upper mine workings, you arrive halfway up Olwen Goch Shaft. Climb back up fixed ladders and you are out.
Mine details in brief:
The Milwr Tunnel complex consists of about 60 miles of passageways and caverns. The Milwr Tunnel itself is 10 miles in length. Artefacts galore. Numerous highlights.
Equipment:
Oversuit or Boilersuit. Cowstails and load-bearing belt. Take food & drink. Restrictions: No complete novices. No persons under the age of 18. All persons attending this meet MUST have 'BCA' Public Liability Insurance Cover. This can be obtained by joining the Grosvenor Caving Club (pro-rata membership). Saturday & Sunday, 6th & 7th September 2008
Open Day - Bage Mine, Bolehill, Wirksworth
Wirksworth Mines Research Group will be hosting their annual open day (as part of the Bolehill Festival) on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September. Situated off Nan Gells Hill in Bolehill Village, Bage Mine is the venue for the open day where all aspects of the group's activities will be on view. These include photographic and video displays of past and present exploration as well as geological and mining artifacts on show.

Hard End Shaft, Bage Mine's engine shaft, will be enclosed and the shaft illuminated permitting viewing down to the lowest 300' level - now water free for the first time in years. Members of the group will be available to answer questions and a barbeque and refreshments are available.

Description: This is a chance to look at the archaeology and history of the mine in some detail. There will be a leisurely look round and the more difficult parts of the mine will not be included, but many of the obscure side passages will be seen. The visit may take some time and you will need sandwiches and flask.

Description: This walk is an opportunity to visit High Rake Mine and see it in all its glory after the 8 year excavation and conservation project by PDMHS which will be almost complete by the time of the visit. We will also visit Silence Mine where the new Conservation Team project will have started. View just out of interest, or before you volunteer for a couple of years of hard labour! We will also walk up Tideslow Rake to see the fine hillocks, opencuts and colourful array of lead-tolerant wildflowers.

Holmebank Chert Mine, Bakewell Tuesday 15th April 2008
Description: This is an easy dry through trip. Mostly large walking size passages, some stooping sections and a couple of easy scrambles. The mine is very extensive with over 2 miles of passages. Silver Eye Mine, Via Gellia Wednesday 2nd April 2008
Description: Moderate grade dry trip. A quite sporting trip, involving numerous free-climbs, a short rope pitch (15ft) and a short squeeze, near the entrance. Like the nearby Gell's Adit, it is a reasonably extensive lead mine. The mine is on various levels. The trip not suitable for novices. Please note that Society members attending this trip MUST have experience and be confident when undertaking free-climbs underground.

Description: This mine is entered via a 30 ft deep fixed ladder followed by a climb down a pack of deads, followed by another fixed ladder climb of 15ft. At the bottom of the mine we will look around the former Victoria Show Cavern and also see a fire set level. This is a limited numbers trip and is not suitable for novices. Booking is advisable.

Gell's Adit, Via Gellia Wednesday 5th March 2008
Description: Easy/Moderate mostly dry mine. Mainly walking size passages with a short traverse across a 20ft deep shaft. Trip is not suitable for novice explorers. There are five shafts of varying depths to negotiate close to the entrance. It is a reasonably extensive lead mine which is mainly on one level. Note: Mine is located near top of Via Gellia and involves a steep walk/scramble up to the entrance.

Caves, Mines, and Things That Go BANG in the Night Wednesday 20th February 2008
Description: AKA "An evening with Mat & Niki". A varied programme of video presentations, with interest for mine explorers and historians, cavers, geologists - and anyone with a sense of adventure. The presentations will include "Treasures of the Earth", a brief tour of some underground features including both archaeological relics and natural features, "Grotta di Nettuno", a short video about a show cave in Sardinia, and first-hand film footage of a recent eruption on Sicily's enigmatic volcano, Mount Etna. There will also be a short film about caving in Ireby Fell Cavern, Yorkshire by PDMHS member Andy Elsegood.

Coal, Copper and Lead Mining on Film Wednesday 6th February 2008
Description: The first film is a British Coal production, entitled "Island of Coal". Part One is the History of Coal and it shows the origin of coal, how man discovered and worked it. Part Two, "Today and Tomorrow", brings the miner and mining world up-to-date with mechanisation and computer techniques.
After the interval, the two following films are of Shropshire Caving and Mining Club members exploring Clive Copper Mine and Snailbeach Lead Mine. The show will finish about 9.30pm.

Description: Society members and guests are welcome to attend this "Open Day". It is an opportunity, to either assist with this project, or have a guided tour of part of the mine system or do both. The mine trip is ideal for both novice and experienced mine explorer.

Description: Torhills Cave will be visited first. This is a moderate grade dry trip. Wear oversuit or boilersuit. Walking, stooping and crawling size, partly natural passages. Short climb from Lower level to Upper level. Trip not suitable for novices. Note: This cave/mine is located part way up a wooded/overgrown hillside and is difficult to access. Bring gloves. A Mining Miscellany on Film Wednesday 5th December 2007

Finally, a film of the fascinating Drakelow underground complex in the West Midlands illustrating its history from a wartime shadow factory to a government nuclear bunker.

Old Tor Mine and Peakshole Sough Sunday 25th November 2007
Description: Old Tor Mine - Easy/moderate dry trip, apart from a shallow pool to cross. Mainly walking and stooping passages, with short crawl and a 10ft pitch. This is a rare opportunity to explore a unique Blue John Mine. The mine is located high in the Winnats Pass and access is via a narrow, rather exposed, steep path. The party size is limited. Permission for access given by the National Trust.
For further information, see publication entitled "Derbyshire Blue John" by T D Ford (2000). Peakshole Sough - Easy/moderate trip with walking/stooping size passages and a short crawly mineralised working which is accessed via an equally short ladder climb. There is water in the first part of sough which is just over wellie depth. The rest of sough/mine is dry.
There will be an optional visit to the upper mine workings which involves three fixed ladder climbs, a short climb and a short crawly bit. Bring knee pads, as upper mine workings are mostly of crawling size and one section is small and narrow. For further information, see PDMHS Bulletin Vo19, No3. Society members are welcome to attend Old Tor Mine only which will be visited first. If attending both meets, bring packed lunch and drink, although food is available in Castleton. Well worth bringing a camera, especially for Old Tor Mine.

"Coast to Coast" (St Bees to Robin Hood Bay)

Description: This is a slide presentation covering this very popular long distance footpath, which passes through the magnificent scenery of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks. Paul Chandler and a group of friends undertook the walk in 1999. This walk was not devoid of mining interest, the highlight being the lead mining remains in the Yorkshire Dales. The presentation will be split into two halves, with refreshments available at the interval.

Description: Easy grade dry trip during which a variety of passages will be explored which will include walking, stooping and crawling. It is an ideal novice trip which is aimed specifically at novice members of the Society although, of course, all members of the Society are welcome. Wear old clothes, boilersuit or oversuit. A helmet is essential and footwear should be wellies or boots. Trainers are not suitable. "Hands free" lighting is best, although torch would suffice.
If you require a helmet, caplamp or oversuit, these are available to hire, but must be booked in advance of trip.

High Tor Grotto and Side Mine, Matlock Bath Sunday 11th November 2007
Description: This is the second visit this year to these two interesting venues. Both are easy grade with walking/stooping size passages and are ideal novice trips. Well worth bringing a camera.
High Tor Grotto is dry, except for the flooded level at the end. Superb calcite crystals are to be seen.
Side Mine is dry apart from a shallow mucky paddle along entrance level. Superb stone stemples will be seen. Two optional explorations for more experienced members will be undertaken in Side Mine. Beware, the first part of the Side Mine level is coated in red paint pigment which stains clothes. Wear old clothes, old oversuit or boilersuit.
Both of these mines were open as Show Caverns. High Tor Grotto was open between1825 and 1914 and Side Mine between 1825 and 1845. For further information, see Mining History (PDMHS) Vo114, No 6.

Single rope techniques (SRT) on film. Wednesday 7th November 2007
Description: The first film is "SRT Getting Started". This is ideal viewing for Society members who are SRT novices or who are SRT proficient, but in need of a refresher. It is also suitable for Society members who are just intrigued.
An actual SRT Personal rig and SRT Rope used will be available for viewing over the course of the evening.
The second visits the "Hillocks - Whalf - Knotlow Mine Complex" at Monyash in Derbyshire and shows SRT in practice. This film will be of special interest for those Society members who attended Tony Wood's 'Mining Heritage Walk' in 2007 in the above area.

Great Masson Cavern, Matlock Bath Tuesday 30th October 2007
Description: The complex and extensive Masson System is part natural/mined, having been mined mainly for lead. There are large and impressive natural caverns. It is interesting from both the geological and mineralisation perspective. It is full of interest, from very early "woodpecker" pick working to hand picked coffin levels and relatively modern mining artefacts. Most of the passages are of walking size and are generally dry.
There will be two trips on offer.
Leisurely - Easy grade. Ideal for novices. Wear boilersuit, oversuit or old clothes. Party size limited and preference will be given to Society members who have not visited the Masson system before. Leader: Tony Wood.
Sporting - Moderate grade. Not suitable for novices. Wear oversuit or boilersuit, knee pads advisable. Similar trip to above, except for longish low crawl at the start and including a 15ft climb down a picked shaft. Party size limited. Leader: Paul Chandler.

Annual Barmote Event 2007 Wednesday 17th October 2007
Description This year the annual Barmote Event will take place on Wednesday 17 October 2007 at the Peak District Mining Museum.
This very popular event (some 80 Society members and guests attended the 2006 event) continues the long tradition of mining regulation which has stretched over centuries. The meeting gives an opportunity to meet old friends and new members and to visit the Museum and Temple Mine where new additions and exhibits are always on view. As usual, refreshments will be provided.

Torhills Cave (Primrose Mine), Matlock Bath

Description: Grade: Moderate. Dry trip. Wear Oversuit or Boilersuit. Short climb from Lower level to Upper level. Walking, stooping & crawling size passages. Partly natural. Trip not suitable for novices. Note: This cave/mine is located part way up a wooded hillside and is difficult to access. Bring gloves. Time permitting, a partial exploration of Long Tor Top Mine, also at Matlock Bath, will take place. For further information on Torhills Cave and Long Tor Top Mine, see Mining History Vol 6, No 3.

Pretoria Chert Mine, Bakewell

Description: This is an easy grade dry trip that is suitable for novices. Wear Oversuit or Boilersuit. Access into mine is via a 15ft deep shaft, using a fixed steel ladder. Mostly large walking size passages, which are steeply inclined in places. There are some superb packwalls and artefacts. Worth bringing a camera. Party size is limited. Tunnels Walk, Monsal Trail Sunday 29 April 2007
Description: Society member Alan Keen is a Peak District National Park Volunteer Ranger and one of his duties is taking members of the public on this Tunnels Walk. The party size is restricted. The walk starts at Bakewell and follows the Monsal Trail to Topley Pike. It passes through four, normally closed, tunnels. The walk is of easy grade but it is 9 miles long. Wear usual walking gear, bring a torch (essential), a packed lunch and drink plus £2.00 for the return bus fare. A copy of OS Explorer OL24 White Peak map will be useful. Jugholes, Matlock Tuesday 12th April 2007
Description Easy/Moderate grade but the whole system is rather muddy. Walking/stooping/crawling passages with a short squeezy bit. Various rock scrambles, plus climb (rope-assisted). A number of impressive natural/mined caverns will be visited. The short series of mine workings off the impressive entrance cavern of Jugholes will be visited first, followed by the popular through trip in the Lower Series.

High Tor Grotto and Side Mine, Matlock Bath Tuesday 27th March 2007
Description Evening visit. Easy grade with walking/stooping size passages. Well worth bringing a camera. Ideal novice trips. High Tor Grotto is dry except a flooded level at the end. Superb calcite crystals to be seen. Side Mine is dry apart from shallow paddle along entrance level, wear wellies. Superb stone stemples will be seen. Exploration of optional passage at end of main level, involves crossing two narrow ledges (down to flooded stopes) and a thrutch through toadstone. Beware that the first part of Side Mine level is coated in red paint pigment which stains clothes. Wear old clothes, old oversuit etc. Both of these mines were open as Show Caverns, High Tor Grotto between 1825 and 1914 and Side Mine 1825 to 1845. For further information, see Mining History (PDMHS) Vol 14, No 6. The party size is restricted and preference will be given to Society members who have not visited these levels before. Horseshoe Dale Mine, Chelmorton and Magpie Mine/Sheldon Walk Wednesday 21st March 2007
Description Mine grade is easy with short rigid ladder climb. Huge dry mined passage. For further information, see Mining History (PDMHS) Vol 15, No 1. The mine visit will be followed by short walk around Magpie Mine site and Sheldon, including a visit to the churchyard to see two mining related gravestones. Bring packed lunch and drink, camera and copy of OS map White Peak Explorer 01-24.

Description A Derbyshire 'Classic'. A magnificent streamway, mostly large passage and plenty of mud and water. Grade: Moderate. Various fixed ladders and ropes to be climbed. Duration of meet will be 5hrs (approx).
For those Society members who have not visited Peak Cavern before, try to attend video evening on 14 February for a preview.
Equipment: Wear oversuit or wetsuit, wetsuit socks, gloves, kneepads, wellies or boots and bring a Choccy Bar. Electric lighting only.

Exploring Derbyshire Caves and Mines Wednesday 14th February 2007
Description "Roses are red, Violets are blue" there's a Special Valentine Day treat taking place at the Peak District Mining Museum. Forget candlelit dinners, we're talking tallow candles and three lovely videos. The first video is of Peak Cavern at Castleton.
The next is a Derbyshire classic, the Underground Journey - Meerbrook Sough to Cromford Sough. This black and white film was produced circa 1960 and contains a dramatic soundtrack.
The final video to be shown features Wirksworth Mines Research Group members exploring Golconda Mine, near Hopton.
NB. For your comfort, bring a cushion as most of the seats are hard.

Description This is a "Working day" at this sough and the objective is to remove a large amount of plastic and rubber pipe, plastic containers and other misc items.
Easy grade trip, with wellie depth water in first part of sough.

Description Lords & Ladies Mine - Easy/Moderate grade.
Dry, apart from static shallow pools. Crawling involved, so bring knee pads.
Upper Lords & Ladies Mine - Moderate grade.
Dry mine. Optional short climb to 'Lower Series' will be rigged with ladder or rope.
Note: These trips are not suitable for complete novices.

Five Dales Circular Walk Wednesday 24th January 2007
Description: Walk visiting five White Peak Dales, namely Tideswell Dale, Miller's Dale, Cressbrook Dale, Tansley Dale and Litton Dale. It is an easy grade walk of about 5 miles along good paths although Miller's Dale may be wet underfoot. Some road walking. The walk passes various mine entrances and mining features. White Peak Edges Walk - Baslow Mon. 1st Jan 2007
Description: A great way to start the New Year with a refreshing walk with, hopefully, excellent views from the three edges, namely Froggatt, Curbar and Baslow. Good paths throughout, with only one steepish, rocky ascent up onto Froggatt Edge. Some road walking. The first part of the walk is on the Derwent Valley Heritage Way. Well behaved dogs welcome, no need to book.
